On 2/22, I went to see an absolutely stellar metal show at Lincoln Hall. The band, all the way from Newcastle, England, go by a title described by the singer to be, “a joke that has gone on for too long”. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs delivered an incredible live music experience to all those in attendance. Their sound makes me wonder what Black Sabbath would be like if they had Lemmy from Motorhead as their frontman. Brash, raspy yelling combined with an onslaught of multiple Orange amplifier full stacks create a sonic assault on your ears that lingers for a few days. The crowd was ready for these riff-heavy rockers, as I noticed many Sleep shirts and hats, a couple Kyuss tees, and even some punk patchwork denim vests.
Warming up the crowd was one of Chicago’s very own punk groups, Edging, who never fail to put on an incredible show. Punk rock fused with melodic saxophone overtones breeds a party in the crowd. Not to mention Faith Callaway’s distinct vocals being screamed in your face as they climb into the crowd with what I can only assume to be a 100’ microphone cable to really explore the entirety of the crowd’s space.
After their set and a couple drinks, I was ready for Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs to make their way to the stage. The room was quickly filled with heads slowly bobbing to the sound of fuzzed out guitars. One man with a handlebar mustache, short shorts, and bare feet ran to meet the microphone at the front of the stage, gripping it fiercely while simultaneously choking himself with the cable.
The bassist also joined the short shorts and bare feet club, while either guitarist looked as though they had stepped out of a time machine straight from the seventies. This group absolutely tore through their set with a vigor and energy that cannot be matched. As amazing as it was to see them rip apart Lincoln Hall’s stage, this group would be incredible at a festival. When they are back stateside, get a ticket! In the meantime, go check out Edging and realize how awesome they are.
